18th November 2016
Dear parents and carers,

VIP Visit to PirateFM: As winners of the recent PirateFM advertisement competition, Porthcurno were invited to visit their studio this week. It was an amazing opportunity for the class to see the presenters in action, writing and delivering News reports as well as other live broadcasting and Mrs. Cockfield’s daughter, Holly Day! Their tour of the studios revealed to the children the digital technology now used for broadcasting and how it is used. The group enjoyed all aspects of their visit- including their delicious snack- and would like to thank Rachel at PirateFM for organizing the trip and for her kind offer of further work with the school.

Christmas Tea at the Academy with Talent Café: Tickets for this event, to be held in the school hall next Thursday 24th November at 2.30pm, are selling fast with a limited number still available from the school office until next Monday 21st November. Your ticket will book a place at one of our tables where you will be treated to a delicious afternoon Christmas Tea whilst enjoying entertainment provided by our talented students performing in a Talent Café. Other refreshments will be available in the hall to non-ticket holders and everyone is welcome to enjoy a range of stalls in Penberth class including Christmas Crafts, 50:50 uniform sale, Lucky Dip, books and toys. The event begins at 2.30pm when all the children will be brought to the hall with their classes until normal dismissal at 3.15pm. Don’t miss the excitement of our staff ‘Hoola Hoop’ challenge or the Grand Auction which begins at 4pm. ‘It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas’ is the theme of our afternoon this year…various hampers will be auctioned (sealed bids will be accepted prior to the event) whilst our Lucky Square Raffle prize will be an amazing Luxury Christmas Hamper. Lucky Squares cost £1 and are also available at Reception. The Friends of the School are working hard to sort final arrangements for the afternoon and would welcome any offers of assistance (maybe for an hour slot?). If you are able to help please contact any of the Friends or let the school office know. Thanks.

Donkey Assembly: grateful thanks to Carl, an outreach Education Officer, based at the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth, who delivered an assembly this week outlining the work of the sanctuaries in providing care and shelter for unwanted donkeys, both nationally and overseas.

High 5s Win: Congratulations to our High 5 team who this week beat Newlyn School 7-0. A special mention to Cerys W, who volunteered to help out playing for another school’s team who were short of numbers before our match, to team Capt. Freesha who also scored a goal, to Jago M who scored another of our goals and to Morvah who scored 5 goals! Well done to the whole team, Rose-Marie, Dominic, as well as those already mentioned, who displayed some great passing, effective defensive tactics and worked together as a team which achieved this great result.

Cross Country League: Following our recent league meeting our school team continues to be ranked 3rd in the area thanks to their tremendous efforts; next league event at Hayle- Monday 6th Feb.

Spotacular Friday 18th Nov- Children in Need: Our ‘Spotty’ Non- Uniform Day raised £80.00 for Children in Need. Thank you for your donations for this worthy charity for children.

Shoeboxes: Thank you for your donations of Shoeboxes of presents for less fortunate children elsewhere. They have now been delivered to our local collection point.
