Newsletter 14.10.16

14th October 2016
Dear parents and carers,

Choir Festival: Our school choir opened the Choirs Festival at St Buryan Church last Friday and sang magnificently. Many of their audience commented on their enjoyment in singing and the confidence with which they performed. Special congratulations to our soloists, Cerys W, Thea and Jenna.

E- Safety information Meeting for Parents/Carers: Thank you to all parents who attended this very informative meeting which outlined many of the parental responsibilities we need to be aware of when safeguarding children’s use of the internet, including limiting ‘Screen Time’ and parents leading by example! It has been proven that the use of any electronic screen within 90 minutes of bedtime significantly disturbs quality of sleep. Health advisors advocate the routine use of ‘sleep hygiene’ whereby a regular bedtime is adhered to (not more than an hour later at weekends) and the hour before bedtime is reserved for bathing, cleaning teeth, sharing a bedtime story. There is mounting evidence that links lack of sleep with interruptions in cognitive development, lack of academic achievement and poor processing skills, including hyper sensitivity to noise. The National Sleep Foundation advises 10-12 hours per night for primary age children. Further information is available at bbc.co.uk/schools/parents/sleep-matters and ww.thinkyouknow.co.uk

Penberth Class: Our Reception children have been especially busy this week! On Tuesday they were invited to the Fat Hen kitchen where they enjoyed foraging before returning to cook their lunch using their findings! Grateful thanks to Caroline Davey for hosting such a memorable day. On Wednesday it was time to look at more seasonal fruit and vegetables at Trevaskis farm. Thanks to all adults who assisted and helped make these wonderful opportunities possible.

Cross Country League: With a record number of entrants-over 300- our team performed well, showing real progress in their individual finishing positions. Congratulations to Joby who was placed 1st in the Y4 boys’ race and to the rest of our team for their determination and effort.

Friends of the School (PTA) met this week to discuss Christmas activities. This year it has been decided to hold a ‘Christmas Afternoon Tea’ at the academy with entertainment provided by our Children’s Talent Café. Tables will be set for afternoon tea in the hall with the usual stalls set up in Penberth Class leading to Santa’s Grotto in the conservatory. As well as the bookable tables set for tea there will be other refreshments available. We are asking all the children to consider how their talents can best be showcased for auditions to be held next month. Qualifying acts will then be issued with time slots to entertain our guests ahead of the Grand Hamper Auction. More details to follow. Everyone is welcome to contribute to further planning next Tuesday 18th October at 2pm.

Keyboard Assembly

Next Wednesday 19 October our keyboard players will be entertaining us. Parents are welcome to attend – please go into the hall from the playground at 9.00am.

Parental Interviews: Please ensure that you have signed up for next week’s Parental Interviews. Timetables are outside your child’s classroom.

High 5s League: Congratulations to our team, Morvah, Cerys W, Dominic B, Freesha, Jago M, Edward, Chyna-Rose and Rose-Marie who described their first league match as ‘awesome’. Their play as a team has moved on this year and they put up tough opposition in an evenly fought match against Pendeen, the eventual winners.

Safety Assembly: In response to parents’ concerns about children getting worried about the ‘Crazy Clown’ incidents, widely reported in national/local press, a special assembly was held for Y1-6 this week to reassure our pupils that they need not worry about this issue as we all work hard together to keep them safe, both at school and at home.

Shoeboxes will be collected in school Nov 1-4th for delivery to local collection point.
